The number of outstanding arrest warrants in the U.S. has been steadily on the rise. Literally thousands of warrants have been left unserved. According to the Winter 2011 issue of the Wilson Quarterly, about two million warrants are outstanding in the state of California alone. A warrant is a document issued by a legal or government official authorizing police or another law enforcement agency to make an arrest, search premises, or carry out an action relating
to the administration of justice.
Active warrant – An active warrant means that law enforcement has the right to arrest the person named for crime they are suspected of committing.
Warrant Served - A warrant is served when the person named has been arrested or resolves the warrant by paying fines or complying with court ordered punishments.
Failure to Appear Warrant (FTA) – An order by judicial authority authorizing law enforcement to arrest a person for not appearing in court for a scheduled hearing to resolve a criminal case, a motor vehicle matter, or any other kind of infraction.
Order to Incarcerate (OTI) – An OTI allows law enforcement to deliver a person to a state correctional facility because of an unpaid fine, an unserved prison sentence, or both.
Violation of Probation Warrant (VOP) – This order allows law enforcement to arrest a person who is believed to not have fulfilled their conditions or requirements of a probation sentence.
